Carshalton Athletic boss Rob Scantlebury has called on his squad to develop a “ruthless streak” following a 1-1 draw with Guernsey on Tuesday night.

Birthday boy Mickel Miller gave the Robins a half-time lead with a brave header, but the visitors hit back late in the game to earn themselves a first positive result on the road since September.

On the back of the draw, Carshalton climbed to 15th in Ryman Division One South ahead of a trip to 13th placed Worthing this Saturday.

Scantlebury said “We should have had the game sewn up by half-time.

“We need to punish opponents when we are on top by being more ruthless in front of goal.

“We are playing good football at this moment, but we need to work on how to shut games down once we take a lead.”

The result has extended Carshalton’s unbeaten home form to four games, including Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sittingbourne thanks to goals from Sean O’Toole and Austin Gacheru.

However, Scantlebury, who took over the manager’s position last week, is not resting on any laurels.

“I want us to win every game and we have the personnel to do that, so my benchmark gets a little higher every week,” he said.

“Credit to Guernsey who worked hard in the second-half, but we are disappointed with this result.”

And that disappointment is conversely the main positive Scantlebury will take from the experience.

“There was a time when a score draw would be seen as a good result, but the players were all down afterwards,” he added.

“This shows me the mentality throughout the squad is now a winning one and we will take that into our trip to Worthing.”
