Carshalton Athletic boss Rob Scantlebury wants to see more consistency as the club continues a run of five away games.

In the first trip away from Colston Avenue last weekend, the Robins conceded an 82nd minute goal to lose 2-1 at Chipstead, despite leading through Sean O’Toole’s eighth goal of the season.

Then, on Tuesday night at Hythe Town, they befell the same fate when a late goal saw the Robins downed 2-1.

The two defeats have left Scantlebury’s side 13th in the Ryman Division One South table.

He said: “We created a lot of chances [against Chipstead], but we need to up our conversion rate because lady luck won’t be around to help you win 1-0 every week.

“It was disappointing to concede two sloppy goals, but we felt we had a case for a foul in the build-up to their second.

“We needed to be self-disciplined enough to see out the attack before it became a talking point however.

“We are so close to having consistency at both ends of the pitch, but little lapses are costing us results.”

Scantlebury named a patched-up squad for the trip to Hythe Town on Tuesday, as seven first team players were not available.

“I had to give two academy boys and Joshua Adusei their debuts,” said Scantlebury.

“Tommy Bradford, Ricardo Panton and Austin Gacheru should be back for Saturday but a few others are still struggling to be available.

“The others will be assessed before I make my final selection but we have been buoyed by the return of [captain] Tony Sinclair who has now played two full games.”

Back in contention: Carshalton Athletic striker Tommy Bradford

Carshalton fly to Guernsey early on Saturday morning for a 12.45pm kick-off, and Scantlebury says his players must not be overawed by the occasion.

“It’s an exciting prospect, but the whole affair is heavily weighted in Guernsey’s favour, so we must focus and believe we can return with something from the match,” he said.

“Everyone can see our away results have been poor recently, but they don’t tell the whole story.

“Winning is a mindset and, if we can stop giving away silly goals, I have no doubt we can begin replicating our home form on the road.”
