Manager Frank Wilson has hailed the Jamie Byatt effect after the striker’s goals fired Tooting & Mitcham United up the table and into the next round of the FA Cup – highlighting his lesser-known attributes.

Byatt hit the winner in the Terrors’ 1-0 win at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night lifting Wilson’s side to 12th in Ryman Division One South.

The diminutive hitman was also on the scoresheet in Saturday’s 2-1 FA Cup triumph over Farnham Town at Imperial Fields.

It not only dropped £3,000 in prize money into the club’s coffers, but also set up a home tie against Brackley Town of the National League North on September 26.

Byatt has now hit three goals in five starts since his surprise move from Corinthian Casuals at the end of August.

Wilson said: “Jamie has been excellent. He has great expectations on his shoulders given the goals he has scored over the past season.

“But he’s not dropped in or out of form, he remains a hard worker and a very tenacious striker.

"He’s very quick and a real handful for a player of his size. Fundamentally he is a goal-scorer with that ability to take a chance.”

He added: “What might surprise people is his aerial ability. When we have to play direct occasionally, he can win the ball in the air.

“It is rare for a player of his size, but it is a sign of his commitment to the cause .”

Goal machine: Jamie Byatt has carried on where he left off

The Terrors overcame Farnham Town on Saturday thanks to recent acquisition Brendan Murphy-McVey’s second half winner, but Wilson reckons they made harder work of beating the Combined Counties League side than necessary.

He said: “We had it easy in the first 20 minutes and could have scored three or four, but because of that we relaxed and they came back into it.

“Farnham came with the attitude that they wanted to win, and it was closer than the players expected and that I wanted.”

He added: “We’ll be the underdogs against Brackley Town, but our main aim is promotion, and Brackley are struggling, so we could be facing each other next season, so it is a good test.”

The Terrors face two league trips to north Kent in the coming week.
