It was not so long ago that Sutton United boss Paul Doswell was dishing out an ultimatum to a toothless frontline.

After a torrid spell of just two goals in four games during October and November, Doswell insisted he had faith in his miss-firing strikers, but it would not last forever.

However, since then, United have scored 29 goals in 11 games, and become the highest scorers in National League South.

Moreover, 17 of those goals have been shared among the front men with Ross Stearn, Craig McAllister, Tom Bolarinwa, Tommy Wright and, most notably, Dan Fitchett getting on the scoresheet.

The goal-scoring reached new heights on Saturday with a 5-0 hammering of St Alban’s City.

Doswell said: “The highlights of the St Albans win are probably the best seven or eight minutes of the football you will have ever seen at Sutton United.

“We were in a good vein of form and teams are finding it hard to cope with our pace and passing and power.”

He added: “All the goals were good, everyone is chipping in – we’re now the league’s highest goal-scorers.

“When we had that spell six or eight weeks ago, when the goals were not coming, I said that you either stick with what you’ve got or you have to look elsewhere.

“You always hope the players are going to come good, at the end of the day you have watched them and signed them.

“I always knew Dan was capable of going on a run, and it goes back to what I have always said.

“Dan scored three goals against St Albans from the same chances that were hitting the post or being saved a couple of months ago.

“Sometimes there is an element of the unknown and that is what makes football football.”

Doswell’s praise is not concentrate on Fitchett, with the wingers getting in among the action.

“Ross [Stearn] and Tom [Bolarinwa] have come to the party,” Doswell said.

“Tom in particular has done so well that four or five clubs are looking at him at the moment.

“All of a sudden the two wide boys have picked up form and the two frontmen are scoring, and football is all about scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.

“We have the most goals and one of the meanest defences, and that’s heading in the right direction.”

Doswell has no injury concerns ahead of tomorrow’s FA Trophy clash with Curzon Ashton at Gander Green Lane (kick-off 3pm).
