Sutton United’s very own Grim Reaper Ian Baird is warning fans that “we’ve not won anything yet”.

Goals from Dan Wishart and Craig Eastmond secured a vital 2-1 win at Maidstone United on Tuesday night to lift United to second place in the National League South.

Moreover, United are now just three points off leaders Ebbsfleet United with two games in hand.

United are unbeaten in the league since November 7, claiming 16 wins and five draws - and that is despite losing a host of names, including skipper Jamie Collins, to injury during that spell.

But while fans are dreaming of winning the title, and a possible showdown with Ebbsfleet on April 16, head coach Baird is not getting ahead of himself.

“Paul [Doswell] and I have been in football management for many years, and we have the experience to know you cannot get carried away and you have to take one game at a time,” he said.

“Yes, people are talking about the Ebbsfleet as being a massive game, but we’ve got to concentrate on Margate this weekend and Bishop’s Stortford on Monday before we can even think about Ebbsfleet.

“Paul calls me the Grim Reaper, but we both know we have not won anything yet.”

He added: “The win over Maidstone was all credit to the players, and people will look at the result and perhaps make us favourites.

“But we know before the game that whether we won, drew or lost, the title would not be decided in Maidstone.”

United beat Margate 4-1 at Gander Green Lane at the end of February when the Kent side were on a rich vein of form.

This time round, Margate go into the game on the back of an eight-match losing streak that has sent them tumbling down the table – but Baird remains wary.

He added: “As I understand it, they have had some internal problems there, but when you look at the squad they have, and the quality players, we know they will be a handful.”

Baird is hopeful that Craig McAllister will be back on the bench, while Kevin Amankwaah, who was sent off in the win at Maidstone, is likely to be available until the Ebbsfleet game.
