Sutton United boss Paul Doswell is sitting comfortably despite securing just one hard-fought point from six in the opening shots of the National League season.

United went down 3-1 at home to Solihull Moors on Saturday, but bounced back to take a point at title favourites Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.

Apart from a short spell in the defeat to Moors, Doswell has been impressed with what he has seen from his side.

He is even looking forward to this weekend’s trip to Lincoln City, even though the Imps top the fledgling table after back to back wins.

Doswell said: “We were unlucky against Solihull Moors not to be four or more goals ahead at half-time, and when Dean [Beckwith] equalised, the momentum was with us.

“In the second half, we went 2-1 down from a long throw, which are always tough to defend, but from then on I was disappointed with the lack of positive energy.

“But to then go to the bookies’ favourites, the performance we put in was quite fantastic.”

He added: “We had to weather a storm, and then we created some excellent chances – we hung on at the end but anyone will tell you that a point away from home in this league is crucial.

“But we have to be confident that we will be in this league again next year. There is no point talking about top five until at February or March.

“Lincoln will be there come the end of the season, and they’re expecting 6,000 at the weekend – we’re genuinely looking forward to it.”

Doswell is facing up to life possibly without Dan Wishart, who has attracted a verbal offer from a League One side, as well as interest from two League Two clubs.

Wishart for the moment will make the trip to Lincoln, but Craig Eastmond (ankle), Dan Spence (groin) and Craig McAllister (thigh) are likely to miss out, while Nicky Bailey (back) is 50/50.

Doswell has also taken on Welsh midfielder Joe Morrell from Bristol City – the 19-year-old is at the Lane on an initial one-month loan.
