Slopply Sutton have Doswell fuming
Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has demanded his players use their brains and take responsibility for the clangers that cost his side against Dover Athletic.
Twice United led in their first home game in the Blue Square South on Tuesday, but sloppy defending allowed Dover to level the scores on two occasions and take a point from a 2-2 draw.
Tim Kavanagh’s 25-yard belter and Sam Rents’ diving header off a superb Anthony Riviere cross were the only highlights for Doswell.
Afterwards he could not hide his anger, calling on his team to maintain their concentration levels and not give away soft set pieces in and around the penalty area.
Doswell said: “The players need to keep their concentration for 90 minutes and be aware of what their jobs are.
“You cannot work on that on the training ground as it is all about people having a brain and taking responsibility.
“I was disappointed and angry at that performance.
“If you give away two set pieces, you’ll concede goals at this level. Dover haven’t opened us up all night long and I thought we bossed the first half.
“The half-time talk was about starting the second half better and then we gave a stupid free-kick away and a Sunday pub team can score from a set piece.
“We’ve told the players over and over again about giving away set pieces and for it to happen again with four minutes to go was disappointing.”
Sutton host Maidenhead on Saturday and travel to Welling United on Monday.
