Ian Hazel is back in charge at Carshalton Athletic and this time he is there to stay, writes James Barrett.

The Robins academy manager was promoted to first team boss on Monday after Tommy Williams was sacked by chairman Paul Dipre following the 1-1 draw with Canvey Island at Colston Avenue.

It left Carshalton with eight points from their first 13 games and although Williams masterminded the club's great escape from relegation last season, it was not enough to save him from the chop.

Hazel, who has twice been caretaker boss before, has been handed the reins until the end of the season and began his tenure with a penalty shoot out loss to Hampton & Richmond in the League Cup on Tuesday after a 3-3 draw.

"I was disappointed when I heard about Tommy because I helped get him to the club and he is a good guy," he said.

"But, when I was initially asked, I said I didn’t want to just keep the seat warm for someone else again.

"I feel I can instil a firm foundation encompassing the first team, the reserves and youth side to build for a brighter future.

"No-one can question my loyalty to Carshalton, I want to see the club doing well and for it to be in a position to win things in the future."

On Williams, the club said: "Tommy has been a big part of the Robins for many years as a player, coach and manager.

"His commitment and loyalty towards the club has been unquestionable. It has been an uncomfortable decision, but made in the club's best interests."
