Carshalton Athletic’s interim boss Ian Hazel is convinced the players he has at his disposal will not leave when he steps down in two weeks time.

Hazel, who presided over the Robins FA Trophy first qualifying round win at Burnham Ramblers last weekend, revealed that some players “jumped ship easily and quickly” after Tommy Williams’ sacking.

The 1-0 win, thanks to Bobby Price’s strike, sets up the visit of Egham Town in the next round and Hazel is hoping it can kick-start a new mentality on the pitch.

“I did not inherit a mess, but players have jumped ship easily and very quickly, which makes it more challenging,” he said.

“But the core is here now. We players who want to play for the club.”

Bruce Hogg is the latest Robin to fly the nest after signing for Kingstonian on Wednesday.

He added: “The FA Trophy match was a tight game, but with a lot of players gone and on the back of a poor result, I was delighted with them.

“Hopefully the boys can build on it because at the moment they don’t understand how to win games.

“They are great lads, they give their all but you need to have a purpose to it. “They need to know what to do with the ball at certain times, and not going into a panic mode.”

Hazel would not be drawn on the events which led him to announce he would step down, only confirming the tie against Egham on November 2 would be his last match in charge.
