Hampton & Richmond Borough joint manager Paul Barry watched his side score their eighth goal in the last 130 minutes of football – then demanded his players sort out their first half performances.

The Ryman Premier League Beavers crushed Cray Wanderers 4-0 on Tuesday night with a late, late show, days after coming back from the dead to beat Ashford Town in the FA Cup.

A Joel Ledgister hat-trick and one from Jordan Rocastle saw Hampton come from two goals down at the weekend, while it was a different story against Cray with George Wells, Joe Turner, Charlie Moone and James Simmonds all getting on the scoresheet.

Barry’s problem is the club’s impressive forward line are only scoring after half-time – and ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bognor Regis Town he wants the Beavers to get into their stride a little quicker.

He said: “There’s been a big improvement, we’ve been getting better. We got there in the end on Tuesday, even if it did take until a quarter of an hour from the end to score our first goal. Once we got one goal we were always going to score four or five.

“It was the same in the FA Cup on Saturday.

“In our last two games we’ve scored eight second-half goals, and none in the first.

“Our problem is that we’re taking a bit too long to get going, maybe our mentality isn't right in the first 45 minutes.

“If we played like we have been in the second period right from the start, we’d take a lot of stopping.”

Hampton could even add to their attacking arsenal before the trip to Sussex – but have been boosted by the news that central-defender Alan Bray may be back before Christmas.

It has been a better week for the club after Saturday’s 4-2 FA Cup victory over near neighbours Ashford, they have another home tie in the second qualifying round, at home to Southern League Bedford Town.

“It’s important to be at home, they’ll know little about us and have a few hours’ trip to get here, so we’re confident,” Barry added.

“We need more competition for places. We’re looking to bring a player in.”
