Captain Stuart Lake has warned the Beavers need to replicate their FA Cup heroics in the league to save their season.

A Charlie Moone hat-trick and further goals from Dan Thompson and James Simmonds gave Hampton & Richmond Borough a 5-1 win over Arlesey Town at the weekend and with it safe passage to a fourth qualifying round trip to Gloucester City next week.

By contrast, joint boss Paul Barry’s men have struggled for form in the Ryman Premier League, which sees them 17th in the table after their opening 11 games.

Lake, who won the Ryman Premier League crown with Hampton under former boss Alan Devonshire, labelled Saturday’s showing their best of the season and has challenged his team-mates to ensure it is not a one-off.

“We haven’t had a great start in the league,” he said.

“We haven’t scored enough goals and dropped too many points. It’s not been good enough really.

“We’ve got aspirations of doing a lot better. Consistency is important and we have been building that over the last couple of weeks. We’ve got to be hard to beat.

“As long as you are in the game, with the quality we have we can create one or two goals.

“Our home record is not good enough – we’ve lost three at home already and we need to sort that out.

“We have to make sure what you saw in the FA Cup is not a one off because on paper we have plenty of names who know what they are doing.”

Teacher Lake, who returned to the club where he made his name in the summer, appeared in the FA Cup first round proper with Hampton in 2007 and then again with Basingstoke Town in 2011.

And, with the club one game from reaching the same stage again, the
33-year-old is keen to complete a personal hat-trick.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have played in the first round and it would be nice to be involved in that again,” he added.

“I wanted to stay higher up the leagues, but it is a local club and I’ve got fond memories. We got to the first round, had a promotion and a couple of play-off appearances. It is different now, but it is good to be back.”
