Kingstonian boss Tommy Williams says his squad is moving in the right direction and wants an FA Cup run to build promotion winning momentum.

A Ricky Sappleton, below, double and one from Jake Kempton backed up Saturday’s 3-1 win at Harrow Borough with a 3-0 success at VCD Athletic on Tuesday night.

They are Ks’ first back-to-back league wins of the campaign after an inconsistent start to the season.

Williams has welcomed a host of new faces to Kingsmeadow – including Sappleton, George Wells, Ty Smith, Peter Dean and Dan Bennett – over the summer to add competition for places to a tight-knit squad.

And, with Williams in no rush to replace retired striker Richard Jolly ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup first qualifying round visit from struggling Farnborough, now is the time to start seeing the benefit of that work.

“You've got to balance the books. I’m always looking at players and looking to improve. Any manager would say the same,” said Williams.

“If something comes a long that is right for us and is at the right price then we might look to do something.

“But things are tight and you’ve got to work to the budget we have and that is what we are doing at the moment.

“Competition for places is healthy. We did not have it last season and that halted us in terms of getting into the play-offs.”

He added: “We have been a bit hot and cold so far, but we are now moving in the right direction.

“Everybody wants a cup run. It brings financial rewards if you can get through a few rounds.

“It is hugely important to the club.

“We want to start building momentum for the season by winning games.

“Farnborough are struggling in the league, but the cup is completely different.

“They have a lot of young players that have been at pro clubs, so it will be tough.”
