Kingstonian 2 Ashford Town (Middx) 1

Kingstonian eased into the quarter-final of the Surrey Senior Cup with an enterprising and industrious victory against Ryman Premier outfit Ashford Town.

Both management teams took the opportunity to try out their squad players and youngsters.

In the sides' maiden competitive encounter, the Ash Trees took an early lead on just 10 minutes through a typical striker's goal poached by Gavin Smith.

But Danny Summers replied almost immediately for Ks and then, in a well-worked training ground move, Nick Rundell pulled back a corner for a long-range sizzler from on-form Dean Lodge for the winner.

The game was pretty much set in stone after the break as the visitors could not break down the Ks backline well organised by skipper Simon Sobihy with keeper Luke Naughton taking the man-of-the-match award.

In the next round, the Ks will entertain Godalming Town or Redhill at Kingsmeadow.

The visitors started well and left winger Anthony Joseph showed a lightning turn of pace.

He darted down the right in the very first minute but his cross was missed by striker Byron Harrison and everyone else.

Three minutes later Naughton did well to push over a powerful rising drive from Joseph.

Ks responded with a 25-yard free-kick from NJ Lampton, which was smothered by keeper Paul McCarthy on his line.

Then Gavin Cartwright set Wes Goggin free down the left but he overran the ball.

On 10 minutes, Shane Graham took off at some pace down the left and around the back of the Ks backline, he found GAVIN SMITH on the near post and at close range he fired past Naughton.

Before the Tangerines could settle the Ks equalised two minutes later.

A Lampton cross from the right was dummied by Lodge to an unmarked DANNY SUMMERS on the Ash Trees penalty spot and he volleyed home into the roof of the net.

Cartwright then set the electric Lodge free down the left flank, he left defender Brett Cooper for dead, found Goggin but his shot was blocked as was Summers effort.

Lodge then sent in a high free-kick from the left which Lampton headed home but he was adjudged offside. On 27 minutes Ks grabbed the winner.

Rundell out on the right pushed his corner kick some 25 yards back to an unmarked DEAN LODGE and he let loose with some ferocity through a crowded box and past a full-stretch McCarthy.

Jon Coke then set Lampton free down the right, he found Goggin and then Lodge but their shots were both blocked.

On 34 minutes Lampton broke down the right but fired straight at the outcoming McCarthy. Joseph took off again down the right but his dangerous near post cross was cut out by Wayne Finnie.

Two minutes into the new half Harrison did well to control a cross deep in the Ks box, he turned well but lashed the ball over the bar.

Then Harrison broke into the Ks box but Naughton darted out to smother the ball.

The K's replied with a Goggin cross from the right that found Summers but his header was just wide of the far post.

Then a Lampton cross saw some hesitancy in the Tangerines backline but Lodge's header was held by McCarthy.

Just after the hour McCarthy left his box to make a clearance that cannoned off Summers dropping behind the away goal.

Smith had a go from 20 yards which was held by Naughton at full-stretch.

Then a free-kick from Ash Trees skipper Paul Johnson was straight at Naughton.

On 72 minutes it looked like Ks had wrapped up the game when a Lodge cross found Sobihy who slipped into the away goalmouth but shot wide.

After that, Ks looked pretty much in control of the game.

A Joseph cross from the left was confidently picked out of the air by Naughton.

With five minutes to go sub Scott Todd had two goes with an edge of box the free-kick but he found the defensive wall both times.

A minute later Todd was more dangerous nipping around the back of the Ks backline but Naughton pushed his drive out on the near post.

Back came Ks in the dying stages. Cartwright set Summers completely free down the left but was caught offside much to the youngster's annoyance.

Then Lampton set Summers free but this time he overran the ball.
