Leatherhead booked their place in the next round of the FA Trophy with a dramatic 6-5 penalty shoot-out win against Canvey Island at Fetcham Grove on Wednesday.

The spot-kick drama followed a 2-2 draw, which featured two goals from Kiernan Hughes-Mason on his return from suspension.

Tanners recovered from an early set-back after Ishmail Kamara headed Gulls into the lead after eight minutes.

Hughes-Mason struck either side of half-time and he appeared to have done enough to secure a win for the hosts, before Kamara struck again after 80 minutes to take the tie to extra time.

And with no further goals in the added 30 minutes the tie was ultimately decided by a penalty shoot-out.

With the drama all-square at five penalties apiece - following 10 perfectly-executed spot-kicks - Canvey’s Ashley Dumas saw his penalty deftly turned away by Tanners keeper Louis Wells, leaving Femi Akinwande to calmly place Leatherhead’s sixth spot-kick past Gulls keeper Tim Brown to win the tie for the home side.

Leatherhead manager Richard Brady brought back Hughes-Mason to the starting line-up in place of Mark Nwokeji, in the only change to the side that drew 1-1 at Canvey on Saturday.

The visitors settled quickly into the replay, taking the lead as Kamara rose unchallenged in the Leatherhead area to head past Wells from six yards.

Tanners levelled after 24 minutes. Carl Rook battled to win possession on the right, beating his marker before picking out Hughes-Mason whose first-touch flick beat Brown at his near post.

Leatherhead took the lead with a delightful break down the right after 49 minutes.

Vas Karagiannis fed a ball through to Ryan Mahal, who skirted past two Gulls defenders before pulling it back from the by-line to find an advancing Hughes-Mason for a clean close-range finish.

Canvey equalised 10 minutes from the end of normal time, with Kamara heading home Victor Osubo’s corner from the right.

Gulls captain Jay Curran missed a chance to win the tie for the visitors, finding the side-netting with a tight-angled shot after 86 minutes.

Paul Semakula missed the host’s best scoring opportunity in extra-time, driving a shot wide after the visitors had failed to clear a Leatherhead corner after 115 minutes.

And so to penalties.

Leatherhead face a trip to Whyteleafe of Ryman Division One South in the second qualifying round on November 15.
