Carshalton Athletic’s new striker Greg Andrews says he just wants to play football again after claiming he was frozen out at Whyteleafe.

Andrews spent two seasons with the Leafe, helping them to win promotion from Southern Counties East League and reach the Ryman Division One South play-offs.

However, he left the club earlier this month under a cloud and fired a parting shot at Leafe boss John Fowler.

The rumour mill suggested Andrews’ move to league rivals Carshalton was money-motivated, but the experienced striker, who has turned out for Leatherhead and Walton Casuals, was quick to put the record straight.

He said: “A lot of people have been saying I moved for the money, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.

“I wasn’t getting on with the manager [at Whyteleafe] and he wasn’t playing me, so I had no option.

“I enjoyed my time at Whyteleafe, but if I’m not getting played I have to leave. I love football and I want to play regularly.”

Carshalton Athletic future is assured thanks to new 3G pitch

Andrews’ new employers, who only narrowly avoided relegation out of the Ryman League last season, are in a transitional period.

With a new manager in Matt Howard, fresh blood in the team and a brand new 3G pitch, Andrews is looking forward to what lies ahead – even though he knows all about 3G having played on Whyteleafe’s new surface last season.

“I know the manager well and he’s got a good football brain. He’s brought in some good players and the team is really gelling in pre season – things are looking good,” he said.

“The 3G pitch will take time getting used to for some of the boys, but it will only benefit us as we go along, hopefully helping us play a better brand of football.”

Andrews will kick-off his first season with the Robins at home to Dorking Wanderers on August 8.
