Carshalton Athletic forward Kingsley Aikhionbare became the club’s away day hero yet again - albeit nearly 12 months since his last heroics.

The Robins recorded a 2-1 victory at Whitstable Town on Saturday, which not only delivered their first league points of this new season, but also ended a fruitless search for an away win that stretched back to September.

Aikhionbare hit the winning goal in both games and Saturday’s winner was his second goal in a week after opening his account in Carshalton's 2-1 defeat at Guernsey last Wednesday.

“It feels great to help the team earn this win. I only re-registered with the club a week ago as I’ve been at university, but I’m feeling sharper after each involvement,” he said.

“There is a lot of good competition within this squad but I’m constantly working on my fitness as I missed a lot of pre-season.”

Carshalton took a fifth minute lead on the Kent coast through a Mickel Miller header but were pegged back by a fine Sam Bewick strike just six minutes later.

Both sides had chances to win it until Aikhionbare took advantage of some hesitancy in the Town defence on 86 minutes to poach from close range.

“I think my goal showed you sometimes have to be persistent and make something for yourself,” he said.

“I have to take my opportunities to show the boss what I can do, and that’s two in two now, but I’m even happier I contributed to a team victory because we’ve played well across the last two games.”

Carshalton manager Matt Howard and his squad travel to Whyteleafe tomorrow (Tuesday) for a Ryman League Cup match, but the young forward is not resting on his laurels.

“There is a lot of competition in this squad, including the forward positions, so I’m not expecting to just be handed a start.

"It’s exciting though, I think once we settle down and really blend together then the club will start moving in the right direction.”
