Carshalton Athletic boss Matt Howard was pleased with his side's display despite exiting the Surrey Senior Cup last night (Wednesday).

A young Robins side, including six teenagers in the starting line-up, succumbed 3-0 against Ryman Premier League outfit Leatherhead, but Howard defended his decision to go with youth.

"Some of these boys' recent performances for the reserves and youth team have warranted a taste of first-team action," he said.

"I was surprised Leatherhead put out such a strong line-up, but I thought we acquitted ourselves well and gave them a real run for their money."

Carshalton had a chance to break the deadlock on 16 minutes, but forward Josh Phillips saw his penalty kick saved by keeper Louis Wells.

Leathered scored twice before the break and, although Carshalton rallied after the restart to dominate for long periods, the Tanners sealed their win in stoppage time via a neat Calum Davies lob.

"There is a good youth structure at this club with players coming through the reserves, academy or youth set-ups," Howard added.

"I'm happy to look at anyone who has the drive and talent to potentially make the step up and represent Carshalton Athletic."

The Robins return to Ryman Division One South business on Saturday with a trip to strugglers Peacehaven & Telscombe looking to break back into the play-offs.

However, Howard is sweating on the fitness of Dan Summers, Youssef Bamba, Jordan Higgs and Bobby Price.
