Stuart Fleetwood is the only one of the stuttering Sutton United frontline not to get on the scoresheet this season, but boss Paul Doswell is not pointing any fingers.

The 29-year-old striker has found chances limited after finding himself behind Dan Fitchett, Ross Stearn, Craig McAllister and Tom Bolarinwa in the pecking order.

However, after Fitchett limped off during last weekend’s National League South defeat to Hayes & Yeading, Fleetwood entered the fray.

And although he did not score, Doswell was more than happy with the understudy’s performance.

He said: “The most frustrating thing for Stuart is that in open play he has done two or three brilliant things, he just needs a goal.

A Sutton United front: Defeat to Hayes & Yeading left a familiar taste in the mouth

Doswell keeps faith with his stuttering strikers... for now

“But then the time is coming when all the strikers need a goal.

“Ross and Tom, as well as they have played, need goals, and Craig is a superb target man, but I am expecting more goals.

“Dan could easily be on 12 or 14 goals this season, instead he has six. So all in all, it is unfair to highlight one out of the five.

“But Jamie Collins has three or four goals from defence, and that gives a good reflection of where the others are at.”

He added: “But at the moment we trust in the players we have, and we trust the front five will start converting more chances.

“It’s not that we’re not creating chances, we’re creating a dozen good chances a game.”

Your Local Guardian:

Dan Fitchett has been ruled out for up to three weeks, but one man's injury is another man's opportunity

Fitchett’s injury has led to a recall Tommy Wright from his loan spell at Farnborough for this weekend’s trip to Bishop’s Stortford.

Doswell said: “Bishop’s Stortford beat Bath on Saturday and they are only one place above us – so it will be difficult.

“But we were comfortable there last time, and I trust this team, so I fully expect us to go there and beat them.”

He added: “Tommy scored a couple of goals on Saturday for Farnborough and reports say he is doing well.

“If he comes in and scores, he’ll stay in the team. He’s still learning the game, but when you’re young sometimes the nerves don’t bother you. I would not have any worries about throwing him in.”
