So the title dream remains very much alive for Sutton United after a confident performance and excellent result away to Gosport Borough on Saturday.

The 2-0 scoreline was actually harsh on United, who could and perhaps should have added more to their tally despite an early scare when Gosport’s Justin Bennett missed a penalty inside the opening few minutes.

Despite the missed chances, the goals that Ross Stearn and Dan Wishart scored were both excellent – a volley with the outside of the boot and a vicious drive from inside the box respectively.

The quality of play in general was excellent with a good tempo and great commitment from all of the players on the pitch including substitutes, which is great to see.

Worryingly, however, both Dan Fitchett and Simon Downer went off injured, which could leave United slightly short on Monday night for a tricky trip to Wealdstone.

Previous to defeat against Oxford City at the weekend Wealdstone had gone nine league games unbeaten, although they won just three of these drawing six – including two 4-4 draws.

It’s the start of the numerous games in hand for Paul Doswell’s men and with 12 points to make up on Ebbsfleet wins are needed from these games.

If results from the matches leading up to Maidstone away on the April 5 are positive it could be a huge fixture for both sides with pressure on Ebbsfleet remaining strong.

This is easier said than done with four fixtures remaining in this period, but based on performances of late the players will be confident of picking up wins in all four games.
