Sutton United midfielder Ryan Burge will miss the rest of the season after injuring ankle ligaments in last night’s 2-0 win at Wealdstone.

The 27-year-old had made an immediate impact with three goals in five appearances since signing last month.

Only yesterday, manager Paul Doswell was hailing the former Port Vale’s man influence in the centre of the side.

However, during last night’s National League South win, Burge was the victim of a hefty tackle that ended that influence abruptly.

Doswell said: “It was a poor tackle from the side, and Ryan felt his ankle crunch.

A Sutton United Front: What a couple of fantastic goals

“In the dressing room afterwards the swelling that went up his shin made it look like he might have broken his leg, but an x-ray has shown no break.

“But he has suffered severe ankle ligament damage and will be out for up to eight weeks.”

He added: “He might be back for the play-offs, but that would take a miracle.

“It is so disappointing that back-to-back wins have come at a cost having lost Dan Fitchett and Simon Downer last weekend.”

Doswell has not ruled out a dip into the transfer market, but he admitted it is far from likely.

“Jamie Collins and Craig McAllister had a hard running session before the game last night, and although the physio reckons two weeks, we might have to bring them back a little early,” Doswell said.

“In the professional world they would probably have another three or four serious training sessions, but sometimes that luxury of choice.

“And we still have 14 good players – Nicky Bailey came in last night and did ever so well.”

Goals from Bedsente Gomis and Louis John sealed the win at Wealdstone, leaving United nine points off leaders Ebbsfleet, but with three games in hand.
