With their 1-0 win over Swansea City on Sunday, combined with losses for both Everton and West Ham United, Crystal Palace finished in their joint-second highest-ever top-flight league position - 10th - in their 110-year history.

The last time the Eagles finished that high was in the 1991-92 season under Steve Coppell and the Selhurst legend was at the match as a guest of current manager Alan Pardew - sold by Coppell that season to rivals Charlton - to see the current Eagles squad collect three points thanks to a 57th minute strike from Marouane Chamakh.

The result and performance was a complete turnaround from the corresponding match last season when Ian Holloway's men were played off of the park, losing 2-0, but it could have been many more.

This season was different though and Chamakh’s strike partner on Sunday - Glenn Murray, who came on for the injured James McArthur in the 36th minute - was quick to praise the team performance which ensured an historic league season for the Eagles.

“What we wanted at the start of the day - our aim - was to beat our points total from last season,” said Murray.

“It’s good; we finished off the season well with two wins on the spin.

“It’s very good to have so much possession against a possession-based side like Swansea.

“It was a good day all-round and will take us into next season well.”

The season just ended has been a strange one for the 31-year-old.

Essentially told by manager Neil Warnock he had no future in south London, Murray was loaned out to Reading with a view to a permanent transfer, but it never happened.

When Pardew took over the reins, the Barrow-born striker returned to the side and has never looked back - even admitting, alongside his manager, that his experience under Warnock was ultimately a positive.

And what a positive - Murray finished off top league scorer for Palace with seven goals and joint top league scorer for Reading with eight.

It was with some irony too that watching Murray play for Palace was Mark Bright - himself top scorer for Palace in that 1991-92 season, but the former Brighton and Rochdale striker put down his return to playing a full season after being out with a long-term knee injury in previous seasons, rather than his goalscoring exploits, as the main positive of his season.

“Just getting back fully fit has been my highlight of the season,” said Murray. “Of course, scoring goals for both clubs has also been a highlight.

“I’m happy to finish off top scorer for Reading and the top league goal scorer for Palace - it’s been a productive season.”

Murray was also quick to praise his strike partner too, Marouane Chamakh, who himself missed part of the season due to injury.

“Cham’s been fantastic and come back from his injury really well,” said Murray, who extended his contract to 2017 back in January. “Unfortunately, he might have picked up some small injury in the game but hopefully he will be back firing on all cylinders at the start of next season.”

Planning for next season has already started in SE25 and the players are set to be back in around five weeks when Pardew and his backroom staff announce the pre-season schedule.

Pardew himself took the Selhurst Park pitch to address the fans after the match, telling the faithful inside not to “get their estimations [of the club] too high,” thoughts which Murray himself echoes.

“Like the gaffer said, and I’ve got to reiterate - we’ve got to keep grounded,” said Murray. “Our first job next season is to stay in the Premier League again.

“The pre-season starts when the gaffer says it does, but we’ll all go on holiday and won’t let ourselves get too out of shape - it’s only a short break this year, but we’ll keep ticking over.

“We will build off of this season and hopefully the next step up will be to beat this years’ finish and the points total - just gradually will do it.

“It’s fantastic times at the club.”
