Former 400m hurdles world champion Dai Greene has been named in Wales’ Commonwealth Games team despite not yet having the met the qualifying criteria.

Greene has until March 4 to run 49.50 seconds or better to qualify for the 2018 Games, which will be held on Australia’s Gold Coast in April.

The 2011 world champion – who also won Commonwealth gold for Wales in 2010 – has suffered from injuries over the last few years and was stripped of his UK National Lottery funding in November 2016.

Seren Bundy-Davies, Wales’ only athlete at the 2016 Rio Olympics, also has until March 4 to achieve the 51.50secs qualifying mark for the women’s 400m.

Team Wales have added 93 athletes to the 31 who were announced last year to compete in weightlifting and para-sports.

Among them are Olympic team pursuit gold medallist Elinor Barker and three-times world champion Dani Rowe, who won gold at London 2012.

Rowe represented England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games but has switched allegiance after basing herself in Wales for the last five years.

Three-time Tour de France cyclist Luke Rowe also makes the trip to Australia, but his Team Sky colleague Geraint Thomas will not defend the Commonwealth Games road race title he won in Glasgow four years ago.

Double Olympic medallist Jazz Carlin heads up a 14-strong swimming squad as she defends her 800m freestyle title.

Georgia Davies will also be defending her 50m backstroke title, while Non Stanford is another real medal hope in the women’s triathlon after finishing fourth at Rio in 2016.

“The team includes some well-established Welsh sporting champions, as well as highly promising budding talent,” said Helen Phillips, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Wales Board.

“The standard of athletes across the sports bodes well for a successful games and a continuation of Wales’ presence on the podium for many years to come.”

Team Wales will complete their Gold Coast squad by shortly naming gymnastics, netball, men’s and women’s rugby sevens and men’s and women’s hockey teams.
