Leatherhead striker Greg Andrews cannot understand why he has been sent out on loan to Walton Casuals.

Andrews, who has been filling a role on the left of midfield for the Tanners, joined their struggling Ryman League Division One South rivals just in time to feature in a 7-0 drubbing at Faversham last week.

It was an even more remarkable debut as Andrews ended up playing in goal after both Stags goalkeepers were sent off.

However, after seemingly putting a similar chain of events last season behind him, Andrews was ready to help the Tanners and boss Richard Brady push for promotion, only to be dropped six weeks’ ago and then be sent to the Waterside stadium.

Andrews, who has eight goals to his name so far this season, said: “After last season I thought I had got a good pre-season under my belt. I was playing well and the boss was telling me I was doing well, and then I don’t know what happened.

“After the Dulwich game last month, the boss dropped me for the Crawley Downs match and I’ve not started a game since, I’ve just been coming on as sub. I thought I had done all right coming on – I set up one goal, and scored a penalty.

“But six weeks’ later, the boss came to me and told me I needed some games and I was to go on loan for a month.

“He told me the shape of the team is not right when I’m playing.”

He added: “I did not want to go out on loan. I was willing to fight for my place in the team. I thought I was due a game but the boss had other ideas, he wanted me to get games elsewhere.

“It just so happens that I walk into an absolute nightmare – 7-0 in the first game.

“There was nothing much I could do, I was running around silly because of the two sendings off.

“I got a good 80 minutes running before going in goal, but it was an absolute nightmare to play in.

“It’s not the best situation to go to, being bottom of the league, but it was either that or the Kent League, and I didn’t want to do that.”

Brady said: “Greg’s gone out because he’s not played for six weeks. It’s all down to the weather and not being selected. He’s gone there to get some back-to-back games and then he will come back to us after a month.

“We also thought we have enough cover with Tom Bradbrook, Kev Terry and Malik Ouani coming in and we’ve another striker pending.

“But hopefully he will come back and stay with us then.”
