He was a latecomer to Carshalton Athletic’s relegation fight last season, but Adriano Moraes has pledged his immediate future to the Robins.

The centre-back played seven of the last 10 games and helped contribute to four wins in that time, with his tough tackling yet composed style making him popular with the Colston Avenue faithful.

“I was at Walton & Hersham after a long period out of the game but, when I heard Carshalton were looking for some defensive cover, I approached the boss, Tommy Williams,” Moraes said.

“I live near to the ground and was made really welcome by the management, players and staff so I’m happy to be here next season.”

The 25-year-old Brazilian brings bags of experience to the Carshalton squad as, before his self-imposed break, Moraes was plying his trade at Premier League side Stoke City.

“I was there four years ago and made it as far as the reserve team but, when I was let go, I went travelling and took myself away from that world for a while.

“I kept my fitness up through training and playing futsal, which I still enjoy, and I am enjoying being back in the game,” he said.

Carshalton and Moraes are waiting to hear what league they will start their new campaign in, however, as, despite suffering relegation from the Ryman Premier on goal difference, a misdemeanour by Essex club Thurrock saw them deducted three points and take the Robins’ place in the bottom two.

The Robins will earn a reprieve unless an appeal by the Fleet is successful.

Moraes said: “What we proved is that if you do your best in every game then sometimes you get some luck to go with it.

“We were so close to surviving but we would not have this hope if we’d given up with a few games to go – every point we fought for counted.”

Carshalton Athletic will soon be announcing a series of pre-season friendlies that are due to kick off in July.
