Gary Abbott has told Daniel Sweeney to forget his trial with Ipswich Town and get his mind back on life at Kingstonian.

Sweeney had a week to remember and forget  as he starred for the Championship’s Tractor Boys on trial in midweek, before his two howlers cost his side dear in a 3-2 defeat at Billericay Town on Saturday.

Assistant Abbott was once considered among the most lethal strikers in the non-League game in spells  at Barnet, Enfield and Aldershot Town.

And, having spent time on trial at a host of professional clubs, the coach insisted the 19-year-old had to get back to his Ks best to stand a chance of making the pro ranks.

“I’ve been through the same thing. I know exactly how he feels and I felt sorry for him,” said Abbott.

“He played a game at Ipswich last Wednesday and was the best player on the pitch by all accounts, but they weren’t prepared to  offer him a contract.

“I was at Charlton, Gillingham, Cardiff as a youngster. I went here, there and everywhere to try and make it.

“When it doesn’t work out, it is hard to come back and concentrate for your club.

“It is always in the back of your mind.

“He has been our best player in midfield this year. His time will come. Someone will take a gamble on him.

“There are still a couple of clubs looking at him, but he has got to be eight of 10 for us week in, week out if he is going to get somewhere.”

Ks, currently fourth in the Ryman Premier League table, host Thamesmead Town on Sunday.

“It is a must win game for us. We need three points to keep ourselves in the running,” added Abbott, who believes Ks need two more quality players to sustain a promotion challenge.

“We cannot keep relying on our strikers. We need more goals from elsewhere.

“With the height we have, we should be more threatening at set pieces.”

Midfielder Nathan Campbell’s first goal for the club  and striker Ryan Moss’ late effort were not enough for Ks on Saturday, with Matt Somner’s red card on the stroke of half time not helping matters either.
