Richard Jolly reckons Carshalton Athletic have not got out of first gear yet this pre-season - and he is delighted.

Jolly was on target as the Robins earned a 2-2 draw with Lewes on Saturday, their second Colston Avenue friendly without a win this summer.

But the diminutive striker insists nobody at the club is losing any sleep.

Jolly said: “There is plenty of room for improvement, but that is a good thing.

“I would be a lot more worried if we were flying at the moment.

“We just have to find the right rhythm and it is all about blowing away the cobwebs at present.

“For me pre-season is just a succession of games in which you have to avoid getting injured - there is very little tempo.”

Despite all that Jolly still notched his second goal of the summer in Saturday’s clash, adding to an earlier strike from Lewis Goncalves.

Boss Hayden Bird has mixed and matched his formations, electing to go with a 4-4-2 line-up that has seen Jolly alternate with Charlie Ide and new signing Frankie Sawyer.

And Jolly is delighted with the arrival of the former Hastings United man.

He added: “Frankie is totally different to me and Charlie and he loves to sit on the shoulder of the last defender.

“He has bags of pace and he brings a totally new dimension to our attack.

“I would be happy playing up front with either of them, but I do not think the three of us could fit into the same line-up.

“I know there has been talk of that but personally I think that would be too gung-ho, as none of us have any defensive responsibilities.

“But we still have a few pre-season games left so we will have to wait and see.”
