James Dasaolu laid down a marker to the rest of Great Britain's sprinters on Saturday by achieving the World Championship 100m qualifying time in his first race of the season.

The 25-year-old Croydon Harrier ran 10.14 seconds at a meeting in Geneva to dip below the 10.15 A standard set by UK Athletics, and will secure his place for the Championships in Moscow if he wins the GB trials in Birmingham in July.

"I was just happy to achieve the qualifying standard and it is nice way to begin my season," said Dasaolu, who is 0.1 seconds clear of Joel Fearon in the UK rankings.

"I knew I was in really good shape and now I can just go and just relax and not worry about the time."

Dasaolu also anchored the Great Britain relay team, featuring Dwain Chambers, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and James Ellington to victory by more than half a second over Switzerland.

"I was there to run the realy and perfect my relay skills," added Dasaolu.

"The other relay members have run relays in America this season so it was a chance for me to see how I gelled with the team.

"It went well, we won by quite a distance and got the baton round."

Dasaolu will once more race the relay at a meeting in Prague on Monday.
