Weybridge CC skipper Joel Pope could not give an answer as to how his charges beat the Premier Division champions Wimbledon by 18 runs in their own back yard.

Saturday’s win, Weybridge’s first of the season, owed much to Luc Durandt’s knock of 89 in reaching 255-5, and Thushara Managei’s 4-41 in skittling Wimbledon for 237.

Pope said: “After we struggled last year, and had a bad start to this season, this result will open a few eyes.

“Wimbledon are an excellent side, so to get this win is great for us. The team played brilliantly well.

“Full credit to the openers, who gave us a good foundation, which meant we could add 50 more runs at the end.

“It was good to see the players starting to have a bit of confidence in themselves, something that has been lacking of late.”

He added: “We set them a 256 chase, and at any level of cricket that is going to be difficultthat is going to be, and although we did not bowl as well as we have done in previous games, we did enough.

“Winning becomes a habit, as does losing, so I am hoping this will start us on a winning streak, rather than the losing streak we found ourselves in last season.”
