Neil Baker has called on his Spencer squad to bounce back from a difficult June and pull clear of the Surrey Championship Premier Division relegation places.

Since beating Sutton on June 1, Spencer have drawn one and lost their last three in the league and were also dumped out of the National Club Championship cup.

Saturday's nine-wicket loss to new leaders Wimbledon dropped Spencer down to third bottom, but although they have a 16-point gap over Sutton and East Molesey in the relegation places, captain Baker knows they need to start picking up points to avoid getting caught up in a battle.

"We have had the top three in the last three weeks, Banstead, Sunbury and Wimbledon, so it was always going to be a tough run but we need to come out of that and start to get some more wins," he said ahead of this weekend's game at Malden Wanderers.

"They dominated us on Saturday but we have got to be better.

"Batting has been a little bit of a struggle and that is always a worry but we have just got to get some more runs.

"It is a little bit of a confidence issue but I think we are good enough.

"We were thinking we could push on to the top four and then, all of a sudden, we are eighth.

"The next few games coming up won't define our season, but they are games we can win and, hopefully, we can push clear of the relegation spots so we are not worrying about getting caught in a scrap."

Having lost the toss and been put into bat by Wimbledon, Spencer's batsmen struggled.

Opener Hugo Darby top scored with 38 but was one of only four batsmen to make double figures as Spencer were all out for 121, Surrey's Tim Linley taking 5-42 for Wimbledon.

Spencer's bowlers then struggled to make any impact, Patrick Turk the only one to claim a wicket but by then Wimbledon were within nine runs of their total and they eased to victory.

"They bowled very well at us," added Baker.

"It is probably as good a bowling outfit as I have played against - all 10 wickets were caught and I think eight of those were by the wicketkeeper or in the slips.

"We dropped four catches in their innings so our bowling and fielding was not up to scratch - but that's the first time this season we could say that."
