Saskia Millard became the latest Herne Hill Harriers athlete to tear up the record books on Saturday as she the second-fastest 12-year-old girl over 800 metres in British history, writes Jonny Muir.

Racing at Barnet Copthall Stadium in the London Inter-Club Challenge, Millard clocked two minutes, 12.44 seconds to finish fifth in a race against six men, some of which were as much as five years older.

But time was 1.2 seconds of the all-time age best for a 12-year-old in Britain, which is held by Millard’s team-mate, Katy-Ann McDonald, given Herne Hill Harriers a unique double.

Harriers' U15 runner Paul Burgess won the race Millard was competing in in 2:06.71, while Millard’s brother Oscar ran a personal best of 2:18.72 to finish third in a different 800m race at the same venue, moving him up to fifth in the U13 boys' rankings.

There was other success for Harriers to cheer elsewhere in the country.
Ed Olsen won his U17 800m race in a personal best 1:57.3 in a Youth Development League match at Eltham, where Lascelles Hussey and Billy Black, clocking 2:03.8 and 2:05.4 in the U17 boys' 800m, also set new personal bests.

Alex Brown won the 1500m at the ESAA English Schools Track and Field Cup National Final in Gateshead, running 4:51.4 to top the 2013 UK rankings for U13 girls.

A little higher up the age spectrum, U20 athletes Katie Snowden and Lewis Lloyd were in action at a BMC meeting at Watford. Snowden impressively won the 800m B race in 2:07.5, beating 2011 European junior silver medallist Rowena Cole into second place.

Snowden’s quest to record a qualifying time for this year's edition of those championships was again frustrated, but she can gain confidence from the controlled and dominant nature of her latest victory. Lloyd, meanwhile, was disappointed to finish 11th, clocking 3:53.83, in his 1500m B race.

Herne Hill’s veterans also proved they have got what it takes to continue competing, as the men’s squad consolidated their lead in the Southern Counties Veterans League by winning the latest round of competition at Battersea.

Early individual winners included Allan Long and Kwei Sankofa (both 100m), Micky Harran (2km walk), Kwei Sankofa (400m) and Tom Conlon (triple jump).

M60 discus athlete Derek Prentice then threw 31.75m to win his event, ahead of Ben Paviour, Robin Jones, Gary Ironmonger and Steve Knight winning their middle-distance events.

Elsewhere, Harriers dominated the Dulwich Runners Midsummer 5k in Dulwich Park, with Ben Paviour the outright winner in 16 minutes, one second.

A flurry of Herne Hill athletes finished in third to sixth positions: Mohammed Ismail (third in 16.23), Robin Jones (fourth in 16.32), Matt Donnery (fifth in 16.32) and Alan Barnes (sixth in 16.51). Thereafter, Robert Edwards was ninth in 17.10 and Eric Dol finished 37th in 19.25.
