Croydon Harrier Shirin Irving celebrated her international call-up for Great Britain with victory at the World Schools Championships in Sokolov over the 100m hurdles, writes Matthew Kiernan.

The 16 year-old clocked 14.31 seconds to take the title on her outdoor international debut.

The Old Palace pupil will now look towards the World Youth Championships in Donetsk later this month.

Another junior international and club colleague Elliot Safo warmed up for the European Junior Championships in Reiti with a lifetime best performance in the long jump in Germany.

The 18 year-old leapt to 7.73m in Mannheim at the Bauhaus junior gala to add 3cm to his previous best. The performance earned him third position in the field of 12.

Closer to home, Croydon’s junior team secured promotion to the UK Youth Development League league’s second tier after their third win in three meetings at Bournemouth.

During the afternoon, the squad picked up 16 A event wins and a further six B event victories to finish nearly 90 points clear of their nearest challengers Brighton and Hove.

Ashleigh Clarke led the way with a double win in the 100m (12.2) and 200m (25.2) and further sprint success came courtesy of Aaron Adekoya (U17 men’s 100m, 11.2) and Melissa Mendez (U17 women’s 300m, 43.1).

In the middle-distance events, Patrick Lucas (800m, 1:58.0) and Peter Chambers (3000m, 9:03.0) led the way in the U20 men’s category, while Laurence Johnston (1500m, 4:46.2) and Rob Spalding (1500m steeplechase, 5;11.7) bagged wins for the U17 men. Lewis Sullivan notched the club’s other track event victory in the U20 men’s 400m hurdles.

On the field, David Olajiga and Omar Reid warmed up for this weekend’s English Schools Championships with wins in the shot and discus respectively. Trevina Medley won the U20 women’s javelin with a 30.09m effort.

In the horizontal jumps, captain Kyle Andrews leapt to 6.14m in the long jump, and there was a double win for Zoe Fossett in the women’s long and triple jump.

Croydon closed the day with three relay wins in the U17 men’s 4x100m (43.8s) and the U17 (3:41,9) and U20 men’s 4x400m (3:45.9).

On Saturday, the girls team all but secured their place in the end of season main final in the Lily B Girls League thanks to a runner-up finish at Kingsmeadow.

The young athletes bagged eighteen A wins and topped ten B events on the day.

In ParkRun action, Alan Burn was first home at Lloyd Park for his fifth event win, while Brendan Murphy & Ben Savill enjoyed a one-two at Riddlesdown.
