Wimbledon Hockey Club player/coach Ben Marsden could not hide his delight after his charges picked up their first ever win in the Premier Division of the Men’s Hockey League.

After an opening day 3-1 defeat to reigning champions Beeston, Wimbledon went to Cannock in the Midlands last weekend, to return with a 2-0 win and a slice of history.

Goals from Johnny Kinder and James Osborn in each half did for the hosts, and Wimbledon now go to neighbours Surbiton this weekend lying fifth in the table.

Marsden said: “It is always nice to get our first ever win in the Premier Division.

“I thought we deserved something out of the Beeston game, so to go to Cannock, which was always going to be tough and get the win is a great testament to how the team responded.”

The win over Cannock marked a debut for Ali Brogdon after his break following international duty, and the change in personnel had its drawbacks.

Marsden said: “In both games we’ve sometimes looked as if we haven’t played together before. “But we’re looking to use the squad well, and play those showing good form in training and during games.

“It is something that will come in time, but that first win is most welcome.”
