Breagha Campbell gained two personal bests as she powered to a bronze medal at the English Schools pentathlon final.

The 14-year-old Herne Hill Harriers’ athlete placed third in the U15 junior pentathlon at the ESAA English Schools Combined Events Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, only missing out on silver by four points to Georgia Doyle-Lay.

The pentathlon sees athletes compete over five events, 75m hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 800m.

After the 75m hurdles, Campbell was well adrift of the medals in 12th out of 39 competitors, before a throw of 8.68m in the shot moved her up to ninth.

She gained a further three places by recording a personal best of 1.57m in the high jump, followed by another personal best in the long jump, with Campbell breaching the five-metre mark for the first time with a leap of 5.01m to move into fourth.

Despite comfortably beating Doyle-Lay’s time in the 800m, Campbell’s run of two minutes, 27.26 seconds was only good enough for her to finish third overall.

She did set a personal best total score of 3,088 points though as Anna Rowe ran away with the gold medal, 355 points clear of Doyle-Lay.

Campbell’s success came a fortnight after winning gold in the U15 girls’ pentathlon at the Surrey County Combined Events Championships.

Campbell’s Herne Hill club-mate Catriona McSorley came 23rd overall with a score of 2,493 points.
