London Welsh desperately need to get back to winning form when they entertain Waterloo this Saturday (2pm) after a run of nine successive defeats.

Welsh, who have been given an away draw in the EDF Energy Cup against National Three South side Dings Crusaders on January 20, suffered their latest National League Division One se-back in going down 29-15 at Newbury Blues last Saturday.

Yet they did so well in the first-half and deservedly led 12-0 at the interval thanks to Sam Ulph kicking four penalties in the opening 15 minutes.

Newbury captain Gregor Hayter was sin-binned immediately after the fourth penalty for taking Welsh lock Adam Slade out in the air. Welsh continued to drive forward, with returning winger Paul Sampson and centre James Storey making some fine runs.

Unfortunately it was a different story in the second-half in which Newbury winger David Rees scored the first try of the match in the right corner in the 47th minute.

Welsh captain Howard Quigley was sin-binned in the 57th minute and straight after Newbury were awarded a penalty try for Welsh pulling down a rolling maul. Tim Walsh converted, but Ulph put Welsh back into the lead with another perfect penalty kick in the 65th minute.

The lead changed hands again after fly-half Walsh went over for a try in the left corner, however, and Newbury increased their advantage with further touch downs by Mal Roberts and Simon Carter. Walsh converted the last.
