Herne Hill Harriers kept alive their hopes of being crowned Surrey's premier cross-country outfit in a battling display spearheaded by Lewis Lloyd.

Harriers were the runner-up in the second fixture of four in the Surrey Men's League Division One at Mitcham Common on Saturday, following a third place in the first meeting.

Kent AC have won both matches, with Thames Hare & Hounds finishing second and third respectively, meaning a three-way fight for the Division One title.

Lloyd, who earned a Great Britain vest at U20 level in cross-country earlier this year, made the difference for Harriers, as he finished third in a field of 193 in 28 minutes 13 seconds.

Mark Dooley (12th) and Jorge Raso Gea (16th) finished in a highly-competitive top 20, with excellent packing from Mike Cummings (21st), Alan Barnes (22nd), Tim Elsey (26th), Simon Coombes (30th), Jonny Henderson (33rd) and John Kettle (34th) thereafter.

John Tayleur closed Herne Hill's scoring 10 in 64th.

Harriers are now third in the overall league standings, 10 points behind Thames and 108 adrift of Kent.

Away from cross-country, Louis Waterman-Evans broke the three-hour barrier at the Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes, finishing in 152nd in two hours, 59 minutes, 52 second in the race from Nice to Cannes.

Closer to home, Robin Sanderson stopped the clock in 59:44 for ninth at the Self Transcendence 10-mile race in Battersea Park, with Gary Ironmonger a position back in 60.34.
