London Scottish cemented top spot in London League Division One with three games to go by gaining a 50-8 win in horrible conditions at Portsmouth on Saturday, while Ealing defeated Worthing to replace them in second place.

Coach Jim Kelly came off the bench after half an hour to grab four of Scottish's eight tries in earning a fifth successive victory to leave them two points clear.

Kelly's early appearance followed a nasty blow to Matt Johnson, taken out by Christianson moments before the home No.8 was sin-binned for killing Scottish ball. Christianson's yellow card was followed by one for Cripps.

After falling behind to a Stephen Claffey penalty, Scottish stormed back with tries by Ross Yiend and Jon Pettemerides, both of which Whelan converted. The pack then drove Melvin Lewis over the line. Whelan's kick looked good but only one touch judge gave it.

The second-half brought four tries from the elusive Kelly and one for Stuart Peel (his 14th of the season), with Whelan converting three. Portsmouth's only reply was a touch down by Ben Stuart.

In the closing minutes Rob Smart collected a yellow card for retaliation.

Debutant Scott Breerton was outstanding in the back row, together with Pettemerides, who was making his first star, and Alex Alesbrook. London Scottish: Vines, Broughton, Reid, Milne, Yiend, Peel (Smart, 67mins), Whelan, Johnson (Kelly, 27), Kelly, Lewis, Smith, Soper, Pettemerides (Ramsey, 60), Breerton, Alesbrook (c).
