Old Wimbledonians had themselves to blame for a 15-10 defeat at Old Reigatians on Saturday in their final game of the season, which resulted in them finishing seventh in London League 3 South-West instead of fouth, writes Kevin Donovan.
They were territorially superior to the home side and forced a greater share of possession, but only threatened the Reigatians line twice in the first half, scoring once through a well organised forward rolling maul.
Frankie de Souza took the credit for the try to become the season's top try scorer and Matt Jones added the conversion. Unfortunately, a poor pass following a scintillating break by centre Dave Robertson soon afterwards denied a certain second touch down.
Two lapses late in the first-half allowed Reigatians to snatch two tries, one of which was converted. Skipper Jones notched a well-struck penalty for OWs, but Reigatians enjoyed a flattering 12-10 interval lead.
The second period brought much good play from both sides, but there was only one further score - a Reigatians penalty.
Old Wimbledonians third XV, the Rams, recorded a superlative victory in the merit table final, defeating Chobham's second XV 69-0.
