Brixton's Samson Oni produced a brilliant second-place finish in the men's high jump at the Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena on Saturday.
It turned out to be a two-man contest as the 26-year-old UK indoor champion finished just behind Olympic champion Stefan Holm.The Swede cleared 2.31m while Oni, who competes for Belgrave Harriers, managed 2.26m, his second best jump of the 2008 indoor season. "It was fairly good despite a hesitant start when I struggled to jump 2.19," said Oni, who works for Southwark Council coaching athletics to troubled youngsters."I can't complain with the second place finish behind one of the best high jumpers in the world. Competing in these meetings gets you prepared for the big ones."The Nigerian-born former Brixton Topcats basketball player is in the GB squad for next month's world indoors in Seville, Spain."Preparations for the worlds have been great," added Oni."I have been competing back-to-back for the last five weeks so now I'm going to go back to training and try to peak for the world indoors."
