Veterans from the Herne Hill Harriers athletics club captured silver in the Surrey Vets Cross Country Championships in Richmond Park on Saturday, finishing second behind local rivals Thames Hare & Hounds.

Carl Ferri, Vic Maughn and Mike Boyle combined to win team silver medals in the men’s 40 to 49 age bracket. The Harriers also won individual medals for placing high up in their respective age categories with Carl taking bronze for the third fastest M40 while Vic also taking bronze for the third fastest M45.

Harriers’ Nici Cahusac, Debbie Jackson and Rebecca Barrow also ran well to place third in the women’s 35 to 44 age category, getting the better of the Ranelagh Harriers and the South London Harriers.

Elsewhere, the Harriers senior men’s team had a day of mixed fortunes at the National 6-Stage Road Relay Championships in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, on Saturday, finishing in 60th place after a key team member fell ill on the day.

On Sunday, Chris Busaileh was declared the winner of the Harriers’ 10 miles road running championships after storming to fifth place in the prestigious Cabbage Patch 10 mile road race at Twickenham with a time of 51.44. Paul Sheil, Martin Dow, Richard Bennell and Louisa Harrold also had good runs in the local race.

Beyond these shores, the Harriers’ Jonathan Stead achieved a superb personal best in the Amsterdam Marathon on 17 October placing 38th with a time of 2.30.40. Jonathan’s new PB is an improvement of almost five minutes on his previous time set earlier this year in the London Marathon.
