The appointment of Darren Sammy as West Indies’ new cricket captain was greeted with cheers in a corner of south west London.

The all-rounder spent a season playing for Barnes Cricket Club as a 19-year-old making his way up the professional ladder.

He put in some blistering performances with bat and ball for the Lonsdale Road club and impressed all with his friendly personality and commitment to the club.

Sammy, the first St Lucian to captain the Windies, scored 83 from 72 balls and took 4-33 on his debut against Southgate in the Middlesex League and continued to perform well at Barnes.

“Darren was a really popular character and obviously a brilliant talent,” said Barnes chairman Mike Harriman.

“He has always worked hard at his cricket and is a great team player so we are thrilled that he has been made captain.

“He’s got a tough job but we wish him all the best and hope that one day he’ll be able to come back to Barnes.”

The Barnes Sports Club bonfire and firework display takes place on Saturday, November 6, from 5.30pm.
