Charlie Edwards will be out to put his World Championship heartache behind him when he defends his British title this weekend.

The 18 year-old from Beddington went to the worlds in Azerbaijan last month hoping to reach the quarter-finals and qualify automatically for next year’s Olympic Games.

But he suffered a surprise first round exit to Argentine Junior Zarate and must now come in the top five at next year’s European Championships, where he claimed a bronze medal this year, to be sure of a place at London 2012.

Before that though, he will defend his British amateur light flyweight title against Wales’ Ben Baker and England’s Mohammed Waqas at York Hall in Bethnal Green this Saturday, in a fight that will be shown live on the BBC.

And he is determined to leave his Azerbaijan experience in the past.

“I just look back on the World Championships as an experience, I am looking forward now and looking toward bigger and better things,” he said.

“I was disappointed with what happened there.

“The scoring wasn’t all that but I am not dwelling on it, I am trying to move on and look to the future, making sure I train hard and concentrate on my upcoming fights - particularly the GB Championships this weekend.

“I won it last year and I am out to defend that title this year.

“I am looking forward to it and to confirming my status as Great Britain’s number one.”

After the British Championships, Edwards will take part in the Olympic test event at Excel in London from November 24 and then goes to a GB team training camp in Mauritius for two weeks from December 3.
