Croydon Harriers’ senior men gave their 2XU Surrey League promotion hopes a timely boost after a fifth place finish at Epsom Downs on Saturday, writes Matthew Kiernan.

Despite placing in the middle of the nine competing 3rd division clubs, mixed fortunes for the opposing teams, means Croydon now lie third overall one place outside of the promotion berths.

The team was led home by 17 year-old Mark Plackett, making his senior bow, who finished fifth in 28:45 over the five-mile course.

Support came from Alan Burn (12th & 4th M40, 29:32), Sam Clayton (17th, 30:14), Colin Oxlade (33rd & 2nd M50, 31:12) and David Brown (73rd, 33:08).

The remainder of the scoring ten was provided by Martin Rowe (75th, 33:14), Julian Dillow (80th & 7th M50, 33:26), Neil Aikman (88th, 33:42), Andy Del Nevo (96th, 33:57) and Leslie Muriziva (106th, 34:25). A further six Harriers provided non-scoring support and 225 runners closed in.

In parkrun action, Josie Kanavagh picked up her fourth win at Roundshaw Downs and Holly Haile enjoyed an identical milestone at Lloyd Park.
