Dean Hanley backed up his pre-fight talk to claim the vacant Queensbury Boxing League cruiserweight title at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Saturday, writes Alan Foley.

The Morden-based fighter produced a near perfect performance to beat fellow challenger Mark Smith on points having predicted he would put on a special display.

“I told everyone I was looking to make a statement and show people my transformation from kickboxer to boxer was complete, and I think, after that display, there can be no doubt of that,” he said.

“We had a good plan going into the fight and I knew what to expect from Mark.

“I stayed away from his big right hand and felt stronger and stronger as the fight progressed, and now all of the hard work has paid off and I’ve got the belt.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone one at Box London who helped make this possible.

“I have trained ridiculously hard and, without everyone at the club, it would not have been possible.”
