Esher's Ollie Millroy had to contend with a cockpit fire as he helped Team AAI to their best ASian Le Mans Series finish of the season on Saturday.

The 24-year-old and team mates Jun San Chen and Tatsuya Tanigawa took their BMW Z4 GT3 to fourth overall and second in the GT class in Shanghai.

Taiwanese driver Chen opened proceedings in Saturday’s race and had his team third in class when Millroy took over on lap 28.

However, his spell behind the wheel looked to be over barely before it began when a small electrical fire in the cockpit threatened to de-rail his charge through the field six laps into his stint.

But Millroy persisted to hand over to Tanigawa in second place, allowing the Japanese driver to bring the team home in some style.

“The entire weekend has gone very smoothly, especially considering our pace,” said Millroy.

"At one point I was worried that we weren’t going to finish when I had the cockpit fire.

"I was constantly looking into the opposite footwell for flickers of flame and when the car began to fill with smoke it was quite distracting. Thankfully it stopped.

“Personally, it was really good to be back in the car and I’m already looking forward to the next round.”
