Mitcham’s Mark Gallop has had a sensational start to the new Spedeworth Winter Banger League at Wimbledon Raceway.

Round two last weekend, saw him score heavily in the heats, and then win the night’s final, achieving double points for his victory.

At this early stage, Gallop, or Bubbles as he is affectionately known, has jumped to third place in the table after his successful evening.

Sussex drivers, Rob Barnes and Steve Anscombe, hold the top two places, but Gallop is in touching distance, a mere 14 points behind.

The bangers are in action once again this week, as part of Spedeworth’s annual Gala Night at the stadium tomorrow night that features a spectacular firework display to celebrate bonfire night.

Gallop will be taking on the best drivers from the south in the latest round of their track championship.

The bangers have had a promising start to the new season at Wimbledon, with some encouraging numbers.

Dale Fairless, David McKeown and Andrew Freeman, are three other drivers from the capital hoping to make an impact this year.

Headlining the bill on Sunday, will be the conclusion of the stock rods’ Yokohama Tyres series, which began at Plough Lane in February.

Back then, we had a night of very open racing that included a win for Tooting’s Micky D’Souza.

D’Souza stands the best chance at taking the title away from red hot favourite Andy Sturt, who holds the advantage heading into the final round.

Concluding the racing will be the 1300cc stock cars, which is a highly entertaining formula, especially around the Wimbledon stadium oval.

Local race fans will be buoyed by the news that one of the capital’s drivers has returned to the formula after a break of several years.

Keith Conlon has been concentrating on leading his Southern Bandits team racing in the bangers, but in the summer he appeared at Aldershot Raceway to debut his new 1300cc stock car.

Racing starts at 5.30pm tomorrow evening, with turnstiles open at 4.30pm.
