Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird’s dream of clinching the Formula E driver's title on home soil moved a step closer this week.

A Wandsworth Borough Council community services scrutiny committee has approved the concept of hosting the series’ title deciding races in Batttersea Park in June – subject to planning permission and approval from motor racing’s governing body the FIA.

The races could be staged at the venue for the next five years and net the council more than £1million in investment for the park via race organisers and ticket sales.

Hersham’s Bird is currently second in the drivers’ championship after winning in Malaysia last time out and heads to Uruguay for round three this weekend.
