Kingston table tennis ace Marcus Giles beat some of the best young players in England to win an unexpected bronze medal at the Junior Masters, writes Stuart Amos.

The 16-year-old Hollyfields School student won eight of his 11 matches in the round-robin format tournament featuring England’s top 12 junior players over the weekend.

Sixth seed Giles won his opening six matches in Harlow on Saturday, but was beaten by winner and top seed Helshan Weerasinghe, runner-up Tom Jarvis and third seed Danny Lawrence on Sunday.

“I’m really pleased with how it went. I thought my performance was solid over the whole weekend,” said Giles.

“I was sixth seed, so I’m pleased to have finished higher than I was expected to. I had some tough matches, but to have six out of six on day one, even though I was expected to win them, was good.

“Overall, it was a good tournament for me.”
