Epsom boxer Jon Gomez admitted he was blown away when he discovered he would be making his Queensbury Boxing League debut at Alexandra Palace.

The 22-year-old will go between the ropes as part of the televised QBL Thunder in London event, competing in the light-heavyweight division.

Gomez only recently rediscovered his passion for boxing and is looking to make an impact in his first match.

He said: “I’m really excited about making my debut in the league, and when I heard it was going to be at the Alexandra Palace I was blown away.

“I used to box as a kid and loved it, but then took up athletics, which I really excelled at and drifted away for a while.

“But since getting back involved with it I’ve loved the training and can’t wait to make my debut now.”

Gomez will face fellow Londoner Guy Jackson on the undercard of the night on March 14.

Jackson has suffered back-to-back defeats in his only other fights and Gomez is confident he can continue his misery.

He said: “I know Jackson is taller than me and has more experience in the competition, but my biggest asset in this fight will be my explosive speed and I don’t think he’s going to be able to handle that on the night.

“I’ve been mixing up the hard sparring sessions with sprints and track work, which has really brought my fitness on.

“For this fight I’m training like a pro to perform like one and if I stick to the game plan and relax, I can’t see him beating me.”
