Teddington Swimming Club youngsters Eden Hartley and Ellie Bennett joined illustrious company in becoming record breaking borough swimming champions last week.

St Stephens Primary School’s Hartley broke the Year Six girls butterfly record at the Richmond Borough Primary Schools Swimming Gala at Pools on the Park, where 295 from 40 schools fought for the medals.

The 11-year-old clocked 21.44 seconds in the heats to smash a record that had stood for 13 years, but was forced to settle for a silver medal in the final.

Hartley more than made up for it by claiming gold in the breast stroke in a time of 25.94 – just outside the 18 year borough record of 25.28.

Bennett beat the Year Three girls freestyle record of 25.10 – set last year, having previously stood for 29 years – by six hundredths of a second in the heats before claiming gold in the final.

Teddington head coach and Olympian Ed Sinclair still holds two Richmond Borough records that have stood for 25 years in butterfly and freestyle.

Teddington Swimming Club provided a further six borough champions in nine-year-old Lucy Bishop, Emad Khan, 11, Billy Bainbridge, 8, Isla Thomson, 8, Luca Petrenko, 11, and Sofia Langrish, 11.

St. James’s School, Twickenham, and The Mall School in Twickenham took the overall girls and boys titles respectively.

* Lady Eleanor Holles School student Freya Shaw was crowned a double London Secondary Schools swimming champion at the weekend.

The Teddington Swimming Club 13-year-old won the Year Seven and Eight girls’ 100m butterfly title in a personal best time of one minute 7.74 seconds, before winning the 200m freestyle gold – also in a best time of 2:16.78.
