Teddington Swimming Club head coach Ed Sinclair says his young stars will only benefit from rubbing shoulders with the likes of Fran Halsall and Adam Peaty.

Sophie Fussell, Anna Smail and Thalia Poaros all competed at the British Championships last week but as they bid for a place in the British team heading to the European Youth Games in Georgia later this year.

Fussell, one of only a handful of 13-year-olds competing at the event, qualified for the 100m breaststroke final in a time of one minute 16.34 seconds to finish eighth – first in her age group.

She swam her final just moments before Adam Peaty broke the 100m men’s breaststroke world record in a time of 57.92 seconds.

Poaros just missed out on the 200m butterfly final by 0.5 seconds, coming 10th in a time of 2:27.05, she also came 15th in the 100m butterfly in a time of 1:07.50.

And Smail, who set a new 100m freestyle best in finishing 16th in the event, missed making the 50m final by just 0.3 seconds in a time of 28.35 seconds finishing 16 – fourth in her own age group.

Sinclair said: “It was a great experience for our swimmers to rub shoulders with some of the fastest swimmers in the world and experience what it’s like to race in a set up very similar to the World Championships itself.”
